Arabinogalactan proteins (AGP) are natural compounds that are widely distributed in plants. These are the non-starch sugars attached to a protein, stimulates white blood cells and triggers other immune pathways to fight the infection and promote healing (Seifert & Roberts, 2007).
Honey arabinogalactans proteins (AGP) are characterized for their ability to stimulate the release of tumour necrosis factor (TNF-α) from monocytic cells (Tonks et al., 2001; Tonks et al., 2003; Gannabathula et al., 2012; Gannabathula et al.,2015).
Arabinogalactan proteins (AGP), a high molecular weight component in honey is responsible for immunostimulatory activity. Study concludes that AGPs are highest in Kanuka honey than Manuka and Clover (Gannabthula et al., 2012). Also, the data concluded that a honeybee peptide known as Apisimin is present in honey and it is also responsible for immunomodulatory effects. Honey AGPs and apisimin both possess synergistic effects in releasing immunostimulation factors (Gannabathula et al., 2015).
Research shows Kanuka Honey has higher AGP contrbuting to more immunostimulatory activity than Manuka and Clover honeys
